ARTIST STATEMENT

My paintings explore movement—towards a little more lightness of being. Moving between contemplative landscapes and playful animal narratives, my work embraces the messiness and absurdity of being human. Humour and tenderness are not opposites but companions; both open up space to breathe, to reconnect, and to move through it all.At the heart of my practice lies a simple question: Where do we feel safe enough to become ourselves and to be seen?Whether in nature, during moments of play, in connection with others, or in solitude, I am drawn to places that evoke a sense of belonging. Places that allow us to set aside performance and inhabit our lives more fully.

ABOUT

Alice Srugies is a self-taught artist. For most of her life, painting was confined to evenings, weekends, and closed doors.

She observed the world through the eyes of a senior lecturer in communication for many years, coordinating an international master’s program and providing workshops on crisis communication and public diplomacy for audiences ranging from German municipalities to PhD students in Uganda. Working with colleagues and students from all over the world gave her a rich glimpse into the many different ways of seeing and being in the world.

Yet something rigid and constraining about the conventions of academic communication remained. Painting together with her mom provided a welcome escape from these academic confines. An opportunity to color outside of the lines. Her mom was an undercover painter in her own right, specializing in oil on canvas, but never sharing the pieces with anyone. When she passed in 2024, Alice curated an exhibition of her mom’s most beautiful works and decided to step out of the painting closet herself.Saying goodbye to her mom at a young age made Alice reflect on how she wanted to spend the time she had left. She wanted to reconnect with the things she loved growing up, the things that made her feel alive and, through them, connect with others. Today, Alice combines visual art with writing and peer-to-peer grief support, using different forms of expression to explore loss, connection, and the messy process of finding our way through it all.
